What is llms.txt?
llms.txt is a plain Markdown file at the root of a website, proposed in 2024 at llmstxt.org. It gives an AI assistant a short, tidy map of your site: a title, a one-line summary, and lists of links with a few words about each page.
The idea is that a language model has a small reading window and your normal pages are full of menus and scripts. A hand-written list of the pages that matter is easier to read than a crawl of the whole site. It is a proposal, not an official standard, and nobody is required to read it.
llms.txt versus robots.txt
They do different jobs. robots.txt tells crawlers which paths they may or may not visit, and well-behaved crawlers follow it. llms.txt does not block or allow anything. It only suggests where to start reading.
If you want to control which AI crawlers may visit, use robots.txt; our robots.txt generator has a switch for each major one. If you want to point assistants at your best pages, llms.txt is the place. The two files can sit side by side.
What to put in your llms.txt
Start with your name and a summary that says what you do in a sentence or two. Then group links under short headings such as Docs, Pricing, Guides or Support. Give each link a clear title and, where it helps, a few words saying what the page is for.
Keep it short and honest. Link only to pages you would be happy for anyone to read, and leave out login pages, carts and anything private. Pages that are nice to have but not essential can go in the Optional section at the end, which tools may skip when space is tight.
Does llms.txt help with AI search?
Nobody can promise that it does. Google has said it does not use llms.txt for Search, and there is no proof that adding the file raises your rankings or gets you cited more often in AI answers. Some AI tools and developer tools do read it, mainly for documentation sites, but support is patchy and can change.
So treat it as a small, cheap extra, not a strategy. It takes a few minutes to write and does no harm. Clear pages, good titles and a working sitemap still do most of the work.
Frequently asked questions
What is an llms.txt file?
A Markdown file at /llms.txt that lists your most useful pages for AI assistants, with a title, a short summary and sections of links. It was proposed at llmstxt.org.
Where do I upload llms.txt?
In the root folder of your website, so it loads at https://yourdomain/llms.txt. On most hosting plans that is the public_html folder.
Does Google use llms.txt?
Google has said it does not use llms.txt for Search. Some other AI tools may read it, but support varies, so do not expect it to change how you show up in Google.
Will llms.txt get my site cited by ChatGPT or other AI tools?
There is no reliable evidence that it will. It is a proposal that some tools read and many ignore. Treat it as a helpful extra, not a way to win citations.
Is llms.txt the same as robots.txt?
No. robots.txt tells crawlers which paths they may visit. llms.txt only suggests which pages are worth reading. It cannot block or allow anything.
What does the Optional section mean?
In the llmstxt.org format, links under an Optional heading are secondary. A tool with limited space may skip them. Put nice-to-have pages there.
Is anything I type sent to a server?
No. The file is built in your browser and we do not fetch your site. Nothing you enter is uploaded.
