WHOIS Lookup

This free WHOIS lookup shows who a domain is registered with, when it was registered, when it expires, its status codes and its nameservers, straight from the registry.

What is a WHOIS lookup?

A WHOIS lookup asks a domain's registry for its registration record: the registrar it's with, the key dates, its lock status and the nameservers it uses.

We use RDAP, the modern, structured replacement for the old WHOIS protocol (RFC 9082 and RFC 9083). It's the same data, straight from the registry, in a format that doesn't vary from one registry to the next.

Why the owner's details are usually hidden

Since GDPR came into force in 2018, registries and registrars hide personal details like the owner's name, email and address. You'll often see "redacted for privacy" instead.

That's normal and doesn't mean anything is wrong. To reach an owner, use the contact form or abuse address that the registrar provides.

Which domains we can look up

Every generic ending (.com, .net, .org, .shop and hundreds more) publishes RDAP, and so do many country endings like .uk, .de and .io.

Some country registries, like .eu and .ro, don't publish RDAP yet. For those we tell you so instead of guessing, and the registry's own website usually has a search.

Frequently asked questions

Why can't I see who owns the domain?

Privacy rules like GDPR mean registries hide personal details for most domains. Companies sometimes still show their organisation name and country, and we display those when they're published.

What does "client transfer prohibited" mean?

It's a transfer lock. It stops anyone moving the domain to another registrar until the owner unlocks it, and it's a good thing to have switched on.

What's the difference between WHOIS and RDAP?

They hold the same registration data. WHOIS is the original plain-text protocol from the 1980s, and RDAP is its modern replacement with structured data and consistent formatting. Generic domains have used RDAP as the official source since 2025.

Can I get a domain that's already taken?

Only if the owner lets it expire or agrees to sell it. Check its expiry date here, and if it's close, a backorder may catch it when it's released.

Why doesn't my .eu or .ro domain show anything?

Those registries don't publish RDAP data yet, so there's nothing for us to read. Their own websites offer a WHOIS search.
