What is an IP address?
An IP address is the number that identifies your connection on the internet. Every website you visit sees it, because that's where it sends the page back to.
At home it usually belongs to your router, so every phone and laptop on your Wi-Fi shares the same public IP. Your internet provider hands it out and can change it from time to time.
Why the location is only approximate
IP location comes from databases that map blocks of addresses to places. They're usually right about the country, often right about the region, and only sometimes right about the city.
Mobile networks, VPNs and company networks often send traffic out through a hub far from where you are, so the city can be hundreds of kilometres off. An IP address never reveals a street address.
IPv4 and IPv6
IPv4 addresses look like 203.0.113.42. There are only about 4.3 billion of them, which is why providers share them between customers.
IPv6 addresses look like 2001:db8::42 and there are enough for every device to have its own. If you see an IPv6 address here, your provider supports it and your browser used it.

Do you store my IP address?
No. We show it to you and don't store it. The lookup happens when the page loads and the result only lives in your browser tab.
Can someone find my home from my IP address?
No. An IP points to your internet provider and a rough area, not a street address. Only your provider can link an IP to a customer, and they only share that with a court order.
Why does it show the wrong city?
IP databases are approximate. Your provider may route traffic through a hub in another city, and VPNs or mobile networks often appear somewhere else entirely.
Does a VPN change my IP address?
Yes. With a VPN on, websites see the VPN server's IP instead of yours. Reload this page with the VPN on and off to see the difference.
Where does the "look up any IP" data come from?
The network owner, IP block and registry come from Team Cymru's public IP-to-ASN service, and the hostname comes from reverse DNS (the PTR record). Private addresses like 192.168.x.x can't be looked up because they only exist inside a local network.
