How domain age is worked out
A domain's age counts from the day it was first registered, taken from the registration event in the registry's RDAP record. We count from that date to today.
If a domain expired and someone registered it again, the registry usually shows the new registration date. The age then starts again from zero, even if the name was used before.
Does domain age matter for SEO?
Not directly. Google has said publicly that a domain's age on its own isn't a ranking factor.
What older domains often have is history: links from other sites, content that has built up and a track record. That's what helps, and a new domain can earn the same with good content and time.

Frequently asked questions
Why does it say the registration date isn't available?
Some registries, like DENIC for .de, don't publish the registration date. Without it there's no reliable way to work out the age, so we say so instead of guessing.
Is an older domain worth more?
It can be, mostly because of the links and reputation it has built up, not the age itself. Check what the domain was used for before you buy one second-hand.
Does renewing a domain reset its age?
No. Renewals and transfers between registrars keep the original registration date. Only letting it expire and re-registering it starts over.
Can I see the full registration record?
Yes. Our WHOIS lookup shows the registrar, status codes, nameservers and DNSSEC as well as the dates.
